Senior Spotlight: Kalii Caldwell (Ogden)

Kalii Caldwell had one of the best indoor seasons in the entire State.  She set a new PR in all of her events and ran at New Balance Nationals Indoor and placed 10th in the 5000m race.  She had some foot injuries which put her on the sideline for the track season but she is back and looking stronger then ever after finishing 3rd at the highland Invite.

How did you first get started running?
- In sixth grade, I ran the mile at my school in like a 7:20 but the only person who beat me was one boy. I went home all excited to tell my parents and my dad told me I should do cross country when I got to the junior high next year. I was like, "What's that?" I ended up trying it because why not? I fell in love and ran a month of track and cross country in seventh and eighth grade and haven't looked back!

Favorite workout:
- It really depends on the day. But, my favorites are probably 2x2k 4x4 and 2-3x 1000 4 2 8

Least favorite workout:
- Tempo runs in South Ogden! They're long and straight and boring haha but I know they're good for me.

How do you prepare yourself mentally and physically before a race?
- I visualize a lot before races and think about them and my goals. Sometimes (when I'm super nervous) I look back at workouts give myself confidence haha. In terms of the physical aspect, I taper and get the same sleep and eat well. It's a pretty generic routine!

Pre Race Superstition:
- I always listen to the same music. I don't know if this qualifies as a superstition or more of just what I like but that's really the only thing haha.

Most Memorable Race:
- Definitely New Balance Indoor Nationals! Being in a championship race at the iconic Armory was super cool. I got to race against girls I never thought I would and names I had heard of from across the country. I did not run the time I wanted or what I think I was capable of, but I was injured at the time and didn't know it yet, so that had been messing with my training and my speed. I was still okay with my race though and being there at nationals was enough.

College Decisions:
- I have a couple of top colleges I plan on visiting soon, but it is still hard because the only outdoor track times I have are from sophomore year due to injuries in my junior and freshman year. There are a couple more colleges who I am hoping will take a better look at me if I have a great cross country season, but I still have some awesome options that I would love to follow through with. No decisions yet though (:
