The present was on displayed in the girls 800 meter run on Friday evening at the Northern Region Meet with AAA 1600 and 1000 meter state champion Tasia Potasinski (pictured above by Ted Plunkett) running a meet record and US #9 time of 2:10.42. While the Westfield senior has established herself as a favorite to win more state title hardware next week at Todd Stadium, Grassfield freshmen Amanda Smith (pictured below by Andy Paisley) was establishing herself for the present and future in the event at the Eastern Region Meet as she blazed an 800 time of 2:13.25 at Todd Stadium.

Western Branch senior Jeffrey Artis got out quick in the 110 meter hurdles finals at the Eastern Region and never looked backed as he dusted off a strong field with the state's first sub 14 second clocking in the event at 13.99, which ranks among the top 20 in the country. (Photo by Andy Paisley)
The wind tunnel known as Sports Backers Stadium did not deter Midlothian senior Jason Witt from motoring around the track for four laps in fierce winds to throw down a statement making and meet record breaking 4:12.23 in the 1600 meter run. He later came back for a second win in the 800 meter run in 1:57.07 with a narrow win over Robert Reynolds of Lee-Davis. Witt was one of three double boys' winners in the meet though as Douglas Freeman had a pair of two event champions with teammates Ulrick Smith and Michael Quash sharing runner of the meet awards as Smith took the 400 (48.88) and 200 (21.84) meter dashes, while Quash won both hurdle races (14.22 110H, 37.89 300H) and was second to teammate Smith in the 200 (21.94). MileStat.com will be on-site with coverage of the Foot Locker Nationals in not so sunny San Diego (rain forecasted for Friday into Saturday) with Brandon Miles and photographer John Herzog. This week will have the largest number of finalists from Virginia at the Foot Locker Nationals in a decade as the 1997 FLN had four girls and two boys from Virginia. At least one in the group including Jason Witt of Midlothian, Griff Graves of Abingdon, Thomas Porter of Mountain View, and Michael Hammond of Midlothian will be looking to break a four year drought of no Virginian boys earning All-American honors with a top 15 finish at Foot Locker Nationals (Kippy Keino, Fork Union, 2002, 15th). While two boys in Griff Graves and Thomas Porter will have experience from last year as returning finalists, Aurora Scott will be making her fourth trip to San Diego as she looks to continue her progression of improved places in each of her races at Balboa Park. A national runner-up last year, Scott is not in the favorite role as she found herself in last year after a course record breaking performance at the regional meet in 2006. Winning is a goal for Scott, but a victory would be an upset to others. Kathleen Lautzenheiser is part of the trio of Midlothian finalists who will be in San Diego as they were all guided by long-time Midlo coach Stan Morgan. Coach Morgan has coached for decades until having his first individual qualify for Foot Locker Nationals this year and ended up having not just one, but three finish in the top 10 at the South Regional. We arrive in San Diego on Thursday and will be bringing you plenty of coverage through Sunday with photos, videos, interviews, stories, and more. Excited to also be part of the MileSplit US national coverage team with national editor Scott Bush, penntrackxc.com's Don Rich, flrunners.com's Jason Byrne, and MileStat.com's own Brandon Miles and John Herzog. Midlothian cross country runners established a first at the Virginia High School League state meet at Great Meadow for the second year in a row. Running under low gray skies and in cold temperatures yesterday, sophomore Kathleen Lautzenheiser and senior Jason Witt (pictured right by John Herzog) became the first runners from the same Group AAA school to win individual titles in the same year. The feat has been accomplished twice in Group AA (1980, 1986) and never in Group A. Read full story...

Photo by John Herzog The Dominion District Meet came down to the final 50 meters before Kristen Wolfe of James River pulled away with the victory over Kathleen Lautzenheiser of Midlothian. At the Central Region Meet on Saturday at Pole Green Park, it was Lautzenheiser returning the favor with it taking literally the last strides by both to determine the winner with both clocking in at 18:21. There will definitely be challengers from the other regions, but it could be a repeat finish next week between the two gunning for the AAA state title as there has been little separation between both in their last two encounters.Photo by Linda D'Amato The Midlothian girls also won their third consecutive regional title with six in a tough top 15 to crack with many individuals from other schools capable of earning All-State honors next week. The top six for the Lady Trojans included Lautzenheiser, Samantha Dow (7th, 19:13), Amy Witt (9th, 19:25), Erin Stehle (12th, 19:31), Shannon Roplewski (13th, 19:35), and Krista Willard (14th, 19:37). Maggie Walker girls had three runners earning All-Region honors to spark their regional runner-up finish (76 pts) with Clarissa Schick (5th, 19:09), Natalie Davis (10th, 19:27), and Susannah Piersol (15th, 19:38). The predicted teams to finish in the top four held to form with Midlothian, Maggie Walker, Douglas Freeman (3rd, 99 pts) and Hanover (4th, 134 pts). Photo by John Herzog Jason Witt comfortably won his third straight Central Region title in a time of 15:56. Former teammate Mark Merritt lead the field out early, while Atlee's Ben Dejarnette was running off of Witt after two miles, but Witt as well as his Midlothian teammates broke away from the rest in the final mile. Midlothian boys had an impressive showing up front with Witt, runner-up Michael Hammond (16:04), and fourth place finishing freshmen Brayden Burleigh (16:06). Midlothian tallied 53 points to win their second straight title. However, their depth issue at the fifth spot allowed Douglas Freeman to finish only 10 points behind in second with 63 points. Freeman was led by a gutsy performance by Lewis McPherson coming back from his district meet collapse and the team's depth also helped with five runners in the top 25. The Colonial District boys dominated the team standings with their four representatives taking places two through five with Freeman, Deep Run (3rd, 112 pts), Maggie Walker (4th, 137 pts), and Hermitage (5th, 139 pts). Maggie Walker was one of the biggest surprises of the meet since they finished fourth in their district meet last Saturday as well.Race Videos: Varsity Boys - Varsity Girls Video Interviews: Michael Hammond - Lewis McPherson Photo Gallery by John HerzogPhoto Gallery by Linda D'Amato

Among the 24 runners featured in MileSplit US national editor Scott Bush's Foot Locker South Region Power Rankings, one-third of the listed runners come from the Commonwealth with five Virginian boys and three Virginian girls. Griff Graves of Abingdon leads the boys with a #4 ranking as he is followed by #5 Jason Witt of Midlothian, #6 Peter Dorrell of Blacksburg, and #8 Thomas Porter of Mountain View. Making his first splash into the rankings as a Foot Locker contender is Potomac School's Johns Ross at #12. Another private school runner has made an impression with her recent performances to earn a #9 ranking among the South Region girls with Trinity junior Barbara Strehler, a 35 second winner at Woodberry Forest over a returning All-South performer in Liz Barclay of Albemarle. Two other Virginians ranked with Strehler are defending FL South champion Aurora Scott at #2 and Chantilly junior Lia DiValentin rounding out the top 12 rankings. Meet Summary · Sep 16, 2007
Both course records went down in tonight's Brentsville Relays with some scorching individual splits and total team times as the cooler conditions must have been welcomed by the runners as shown by their race performances. The Eleanor Roosevelt girls (1st, 4:42) from Maryland showed they are still a force to be reckoned with in the Southeast region and nationally despite graduation losses, as they were a minute and a half faster than their 2006 course record win (46:13) at Brentsville to defeat a virtually identical Midlothian squad (2nd, 44:44) from last by a few seconds. Midlothian anchor Kathleen Lautzenheiser was able to make up quite a considerable deficit on Eleanor Roosevelt's Dominique Lockart for the fastest split ever at Brentsville Relays in 8:43, but not enough to pull Midlo ahead as the two outstanding programs gapped the field by quite a margin. Third place "A" race finishers from Lake Braddock won the combined team title as their depth was showcaed with the performances of their "B" and "C" teams earlier in the evening. After the preseason Southeast region and Virginia #1 ranked Midlothian boys were dealt a humbling fourth place finish in their season opener at Great Meadow and great adversity with a major transfer loss as well as a few injuries, they rebounded nicely at Brentsville Relays thanks to a 7:27 anchor leg from Jason Witt (pictured above) to come from behind on one of the teams which beat them last week in Mountain View with a 38:56 course record win. Mountain View (2nd, 39:15) had built an early lead after a great 7:26 second leg by Foot Locker finalist Thomas Porter. However, neither 2007 Foot Locker hopefuls Porter or Witt were distinguished with honors of the fastest split of the night as Turner Ashby junior Alex Ott opened up in a intense first leg battle with a 7:25 split. Mountain View showed why they still should be considered a better team than Midlothian until the Trojans can beat the Wildcats in a 5K race as their winning "B" and "C" teams earlier gave Coach Dave Davis' squad the overall title and second trophy to bring home.BRENTSVILLE RELAYS RESULTS - COACHES EMAIL YOUR SPLITS (ALL LEGS) TO MILESTAT@GMAIL.COMBrentsville Relays Photo Gallery by Ted Plunkett - 648 photos total. Commonwealth's Four Horsemen! All photos by John Herzog The "Commonwealth's Four Horsemen" as they will be called this cross country season make up the top four cream of the crop individuals rankings with Peter Dorrell of Blacksburg, Jason Witt of Midlothian, Griff Graves of Abingdon, and Thomas Porter of Mountain View. All are legitimate qualifiers for Footlocker Nationals and will pair up against another for some classic battles for the state crowns in AAA with Witt and Porter then in AA with Graves and Dorrell. The state's elite are not just found with Graves and Dorrell for Group AA, as a total of six AA runners are ranked in the pre-season top 15, while Jamestown and Western Albemarle rank among the state's best teams at #3 and #4 in Virginia.

MileSplit US national editor Scott Bush thinks very highly of Virginia's best cross country runners and rightfully so with two Foot Locker finalists returning in Griff Graves and Thomas Porter, a Nike Indoor Nationals 5K champion in Jason Witt, and a Group AA outdoor state triple champion in Peter Dorrell as all four were ranked by Bush in his pre-season Foot Locker Power Rankings in the South region. Virginia has twice as many runners ranked in the top ten than the next best states in North Carolina and Texas, who both have two individuals ranked among the first ten. In 2006, Virginia had three qualifiers for Foot Locker Nationals, which was the most for the state since 2001. The last time Virginia had more than three qualifiers was in 1995 when only eight made out of Charlotte onto nationals as the state had a dominant showing with five of the eight finalists. The potential for four finalists this year is very realistic. Alex Ott, Joe Lorusso, and Brian Landry also received mention. MileSplit's Foot Locker Power Rankings - South Boys

MileStat.com's Brandon Miles analyzes the top five teams in the state to look out for this cross country season as part of a series of preview articles leading into this fall. Midlothian is the front runner again after holding strong last fall as a pre-season #1 to the finish and onto a dominating AAA state title and Virginia's first NTN appearance. The Trojans will have the handle the pressure of the bull's eye on them once again in 2007. The Western Albemarle boys have a team that has the talent to match up with Midlo's front three with the trio under 16 minutes in the Footlocker South sophomore race back. Oakton has the power in depth and numbers as last fall with six runners back under 10 minutes in the 3200. Jamestown is the sleeper with a very youthful squad as all of their top five runners will be back in 2008 as well. Mountain View is only three years old, but the road to the state meet podium looks to be paved ahead of schedule.
