UHSTCA Athletes of the Week, April 29 - May 5

UHSTCA Athlete of the Week

May 9, 2012

This week was an exciting week, with many state records falling by the wayside because of phenomenal performances at the BYU invite, specifically in the mid-distance category. Congratulations to all our athletes of the week!

Large School Female Track Athlete of the Week: Ashleigh Warner, Sr. Mountain View

Smashing the state record in a ridiculous time of 4:50.13 for the 1600m, Ashleigh Warner takes home her second athlete of the week award. With such a tight race, she showed that she belonged in the front on the last lap. She is having a tremendous season this year and with state just around the corner she is one you won’t want to miss!

Large School Male Athlete of the Week: Brad Nye, Sr. Davis

Winning his first athlete of the week title, Brad Nye is taking the outdoor track by storm! He is the reigning indoor national champ in the mile and continues to show his dominance on the track. This past weekend he destroyed the state record in the 800m and became the first high school athlete to break 1:52 by running an insane 1:51.89 to win the BYU outdoor invitational.

Small School Female Track Athlete of the Week: Erica Birk, Sr. North Summit

Erica Birk of North Summit took 2nd place in her 1600M race at the BYU Invite with a ridiculously fast time of 4:51.02. Although her mark didn't give her first place, amazingly it still beat the previous state record and put her in the top mark for small schools. Watch for Erica to be a strong competitor at state next week.

Small School Male Track Athlete of the Week: Ammon Mitchell, Jr. San Juan

Ammon Mitchell, a returning Athlete of the Week, ran a great 110 hurdles at the BYU Invite with a time of 15.07 giving him second place. His mark is the best in all of 2A and gives him 6th place overall in state rankings. He will be fun to watch as state is just around the corner.

Large School Female Field Athlete of the Week: Taylir Garrison, Sr. American Fork

Garrison, a first time Athlete of the Week, won the High Jump at the BYU invite with a mark of 5 feet 6 inches, giving her third place in state rankings by only an inch and first place ranking in 4A. Watch her as she goes for her season best this next week at regions and state!

Large School Male Field Athlete of the Week: Austin Kafentzis, Fr. Jordan

With the Javelin being one of the most competitive field events this season, Kafentzis proved his point, showing that he belong on top with a mark of 195 feet 3.25 inches at the BYU invite this past weekend. He is now the man to beat with the top mark in the state by nearly six feet!

Small School Female Field Athlete of the Week: Rachel Garrett, Sr. Grand County

Representing Grand High school, Rachel Garrett not only performed well in the Discus throw, but won the Shot put for the small school girls this week at the BYU invite. She made it as the Athlete of the Week with her mark in the Discus with 130 feet, 2.20 inches. With State approaching fast, Garrett will hopefully do well in both events.

Small School Male Field Athlete of the Week: Max Lewis, Sr. Duchesne

Placing 2nd at the BYU invite and 1st in the small school division, Lewis really showed what he was made of this past weekend in the Discus throw with a mark of 158 feet .75 inches. This mark places him just two and a half feet below the top mark in the state, giving him third place in rankings and first in small schools. He is one to watch as we come to the close of the season.
