Will Maple Mountain be King of the Mountain?

Last year, Sky View took the title, and convincingly so, but a repeat is going to be tough in the 4A ranks.

One thing I'm learning as I work through this series of articles is that the information existing in the Utah database isn't always accurate. I've been working hard on fixing the problems I can identify and hope that most of the major kinks have been worked out by now.

What isn't in question is that Sky View enjoyed a dominating state meet last spring. But Brady Martin and Anthony Israelson have graduated, and their state meet points walked the aisle with them. Still, there's a solid nucleus coming back. Jalen Moore (high jump), Tyler Roberts (800/1600), and Tyler Stephens (110 hurdles) are each potential state champions. And that's a very good place to start for any team. Whether the Bobcats can fill in enough points around these guys is the bigger question remaining to be answered.

The number one team Sky View will have to contend with in their quest to repeat appears to be Maple Mountain. The Golden Eagles hopes are buoyed by throwers Zachary Decker and Skyler Porcaro, jumper Spencer Asay, sprinter Cameron Carson, and middle distance guy Isaac Faux. Asay was only freshmen last spring (according to the state meet results) and may hold the most potential of any on the list of go-to guys. Isaac Faux was also listed as a freshman on the state meet results for last spring, but should be at least a junior this fall according to results appearing from the 2010-11 school year (the problem of mistaken years in school in the state meet results from last spring appears to be fairly widespread).

Another team that merits serious consideration is Mountain View. The Bruins have a long tradition of track and field excellence, but will be looking first to have a better state meet than what they had last year.

Woods Cross had a solid state meet last spring but took some big hits to graduation. Much the same story applies to Springville. But, before you start crossing these teams off your list, consider that good teams and good coaching always seem to rebound from blows dealt by graduation. Often, the question that's more important than "Who graduated?" is "What does the tradition of this program tell you about the team?"
