The Richfield Boys look very tough this season as they look to win another state championship this weekend on the track. In the virtual meet we ran on the competition, Richfield came out over 100 points ahead of the closest competitor, North Summit. If there is one thing that is great about track and field is no meet is won on paper, and your personal bests don’t get you anywhere if you don’t bring it on race day. That being said, Richfield would have to see a pretty big meltdown before an upset became a likely possibility.
North Summit will begin their quest to overthrow Richfield in the sprint events, where Ben Stephens holds the top ranking in both the 100m and the 200m events. Just behind him in the rankings is Derrick Sorensen of Richfield. In the 400m Mika Mason of Richfield is the top talent in the event as he has run 49.93 already this season and will be looking to lower his PR.
In the distance events, Richfield has great depth and will look for big points, but North Summit has plenty of places to pick up points as well. Eli Oftedal of Rowland Hall is ranked #1 in the 800m Run, Burton Griffin of Richfield is Ranked 2nd, and is the top seed in the 1600m.
In the field events Daven Russell of Kanab will look for double gold in the Shot Put and the Discus. Brenan Thomas of Richfield is the top seed in both the Long Jump and High Jump and has cleared 6’7” this season which is 4 inches ahead of the field.
