Salute To Seniors: Skyler Koster (Orem)

Want To Be Our Next Senior Salute? Find Out How!

School: Orem

What was your most memorable race/throw/jump/vault/moment?
My most memorable race was the footlocker west regional. Only 5 of us went and it was a blast! I remember getting sick the night before the race and not thinking I was going to do very well. I woke up in the morning and still felt like garbage, but I chose to run anyway. It ended up being my fastest 5k of all time breaking 16! Messing around in California the rest of the weekend was pretty fun too!

Who would you consider your biggest competition over your four years?
Easily Spencer Standing from Mountain View. We had been racing together since 7th grade and we were always right next to each other in every race. I was finally able to beat him in the footlocker west regional!

What was your greatest accomplishment?
My greatest accomplishment in high school running, was building the team up to a point where we were running competitively. My sophomore year wasn't so great at all, we placed 12th at state. My junior year we were all starting to get better and we placed 7th at state. This year was the best for improvement by far. We ended up placing 3rd at state in a loaded field, and a lot went wrong for us during the race. For example my friend took a fall 2 miles in and my left shoe came off in the first 400m. Its great that we were still able to place so well. I have no doubts that next years Orem squad will dominate!

If you could do it all over again what would you change about your running career in high school?
I would definitely have had more fun, and have a better mentality. Running used to be this thing that I would grind through every day. I didn't improve until I had fun with it.

What were the most difficult obstacles you had to overcome?
In the summer I got a bad case of IT band syndrome. It was really hard to work through everything during the summer, but it all payed off in the end when I had my best season yet!

What will you miss the most?
    My teammates and coaches

What advice would you give to younger athletes?
Just be consistent and greatness will come!

What influence has your coach had with respect to your performance and overall life goals?
Coach Andy has influenced me in so many positive ways. He has taught me the value of commitment and working hard, and most of all he has taught me how to get through tough times like injury.

Who would you like to say thank you to?
Thank you to my coaches and teammates. I wouldn't  be where I'm at without them!
