Utah State Boys XC Championships (UT)

Girls recap

The hottest individual action of the day was in 4A, where US #6 Alek Parsons edged out #17(and Utah 3200 champ) Will Handley and #7 Garek Bielaczyc for the win in 14:58. Handley's US #3 Timpanagos squad won the team title.

Timp's 1 through 5 runners averaged 15:37 for the newly renovated (and apparently significantly faster) Sugarhouse course. That's two seconds better than 5A champions and US #4 Davis averaged in toppling the American Fork dynasty on Wednesday. The US #21 Cavemen had won six straight Utah state meets, but Davis ended the streak with incredibly impressive depth. The Darts' top five runners--Camren Todd, Logan Mackay, Colter Blanchard, Colton Rimann, and Matt Ward--all landed in the top thirteen, just eighteen seconds apart.

How good was Davis today? Even if AF's Mckay Johns won the race--he made his season debut and finished 32nd--Davis would have won 55-62. American Fork didn't even get to end their streak with a runner-up finish. Upstart Lehi beat Fork out for second; AF finished third ahead of national bubble team Lone Peak.

The lone peak for American Fork? Casey Clinger had the fastest time on the day with his 14:52 win. That's the fastest time at the Utah state meet since at least 2000, though the 2000-2014 meets were run on a different layout at Sugarhouse. In just one day, Clinger and Parsons joined Luke Puskedra and Ben Saarel as the only boys to break fifteen minutes at the Utah state meet, though with the new course, take that comparison with a mountain range of salt.

In 3A, US #12 Desert Hills cruised to a 32-59 win (16:11 average, 29' 1-5 spread) over Pine View for its third straight state championship. Nick Hill of PV won the individual title in 15:43. Per his MileSplit profile, that was only the second win in Hill's four-year cross country career.
