Q&A with Coach Ribera

How has summer training been going for your team?

Summer training has been great! The best part this year has been the overall numbers on the team showing up everyday are high, and especially with the varsity team we have been very consistent.

Who have you been most impressed or surprised with their improvement and/or fitness from their summer training?

The best part about this team on the girl’s side is the pack we have going, we have 10 girls who really work hard together and push each other. The seniors of this group I have been especially impressed with, Miranda McQuarie, Rachel Jensen and Sydney Scheiess. On the boy’s side we have 4 sophomore boys who are really the core of the varsity team, Ammon Brock, Aiden Troutner, Carter Norton and Collin McClaren. Their ability to add on the mileage and continue to have quality speed workouts have been impressive.

Who are your team captains or leaders and what stands out about them as examples for the rest of their teammates?

Carter Norton on the boys side is a great team leader, he embodies what every coach wants in an athlete , he is hardworking, respectful and really takes care of his teammates. He puts the need of the team above himself always. On the girls side, Hope Lundberg has really become a great leader. She leads by quiet example, but runs for her team rather than for herself.

What are some staple workouts that your team does during the season?

The last two years we have put a big emphasis on hill work to get stronger, both short sprint, all out hills, as well as longer repeats to really get strong. The other team staple are 400 repeats, we do a lot of 400s, 600s and 800s on the track at race pace to really get that body used to running the pace we want. We decrease the recovery as the season moves on.

Any impactful freshmen or transfers to join the team this season?

We have a couple transfers, we will see what happens as the season progresses!

What do you view as the strength of your team this year?

The biggest strength on the girls side is the pure number we have that can compete varsity. We have a solid 10 girls that on any given day could be in our top 5. They work so well together, put the team before themselves and really work hard. Having so many girls that can score, it takes some of the pressure off.

What are your goals for the team this season?

The goals for the year are to win region and compete for a state title.

You return your entire team from the fifth place squad in 2014 - how has this team grown since that performance?

Last year we were young, lots of sophomores. Since then a few of those girls really had big track seasons, learned how to race and push themselves. The team is hungry and they want to do it for those seniors.
