Last year, the Davis girls doubled the total on second-place Riverton at the state meet. Are we looking at a closer contest this year?
Some teams have a keen understanding of what it takes to win. Davis is one of those teams. A team that has developed that kind of mindset becomes very difficult to beat, until and unless they become careless or complacent.
When you look up and down the Davis girls roster, you see so many ways the Darts can hurt you, that the most logical reaction is to simply shake your head. Shea Martinez dominates the middle distance events. Sylvia Harrison dominates the 100, 200, and 100 hurdles--anything that requires flat-out speed. Adelyn Jones covers whatever Sylvia Harrison doesn't in more or less the same events. Jessica Richardson is one of the state's best throwers. Simply stated, Davis looks to score points in almost every event at the state meet. And, in most cases, those points aren't going to come in onesies and twosies.
Two teams with hopes of challenging Davis this spring are Weber and Copper Hills. Both schools can score points in bunches as well.
Weber's biggest weapon is hurdler/long jumper Mykah Heaton. Heaton wasn't especially busy on the indoor circuit What we did see there may indicate an eye toward multi events, but there's no reason to think she won't be working on further lowering of her 45-something 300 hurdle speed as well. Karlee Deeter figures to add significant points in distance events as well.
For Copper Hills, promise is deep in both hurdles and throws, but the team probably doesn't figure to score in the same breadth of events that Weber does. Top threats for Copper Hills include hurdler Rachel Brooks and thrower Heilala Havea, the top returner in both the shot and disc.
