A One-Horse Race in 2A Girls?

Breaking down the prospects for Utah Track and Field 2012

It would be easy to conclude that the 2A girls contest comes down to a single team, but that kind of conclusion too often proves to be premature.

By all outward appearances, the defending 2A girls champion North Summit Braves have everything aligned for another tour of conquest this spring. But, every so often you meet up with a team that has a sense of being snubbed in preseason thoughts and carries that sense through the season as a flashpoint of motivation. So, we should be hesitant to be inscribing team names on the first-place trophy.

That said, it's going to take a spectacular bit of stepping up for anyone to close the gap on North Summit.

A big part of the reason North Summit is so good is spelled E-r-i-c-a. As in Birk the distance runner and Richins the hurdler. Add in sprinter/long jumper Samantha Nicholes and you could easily be staring down as many as 80 points at the state meet on the legs of these three alone. That's tough for anyone to overcome. But, North Summit has others who figure to contribute as well. The Braves should also have big expectations for McCall Richins in the 400 and Kaitlyn Rowser in the shot and disc. Generally speaking, the Braves are loaded across the board. That distinction bodes well for North Summit's potential to score relay points. North Summit is as complete of a team as you're likely to ever see in 2A.

San Juan, Kanab, and Parowan figure to field solid teams from the southern regions of the state, perhaps even staking claim to an individual title or two, but whether they can assemble enough firepower to make a serious run at North Summit is a question waiting for an answer. An incoming freshman or two at any of these schools could make an enormous difference, so we'll play the game of wait-and-see.

In the meanwhile, the table below shows what a virtual meet between all 2A schools, based on last year's performances, might look like in terms of team scoring. It's no guarantee of how things shake out this spring, but it is suggestive of which teams hold the best hands and who the top contenders in each event are likely to be.
