There were a lot of nationally elite performances and upsets here on the first day. One athlete who really stood out was Grant Gardner of Springville. Gardner began his day running in the 3200m where he beat All-American Thomas Boyden in a time of 9:06.36 which is the fastest (elevated) time in the State! After that, he came back and won the 800m in a time of 1:53.95 and finally ended his day anchoring his SMR team to the win giving him three gold medals in just one day! Carlee Hansen was another athlete that racked up some hardware as well as walking away with a first place medal in the 800m and SMR.
