Athlete Spotlight: Meghan Hunter (Provo)

Meghan Hunter is one of the top high school prospects in the country for a reason.  She has an impressive resume ranging from multiple state championships,  state records,  and an appearance in an international meet representing the United States.  Hunter is a sprinter who also dabbles with some distance as well, seeing how she has run cross country all 4 years of her high school career and even qualified for the XC State meet as an individual.  Meghan is looking to defend all 4 of her state titles from last season and drop some time off of her already impressive PRs.

How did you first get started running?
I'm in a family of runners so I've been around it pretty much my whole life.  I did the Hershey track meets as a kid but never was serious about competing until freshman year.

Favorite Workout?
I love 300m repeats.  I used to think they were the worst, but now they're the perfect distance.  Not too short but not too far.

Least Favorite Workout?
I never look forward to circuits.  Pretty much anything that's conditioning but doesn't involve running.

How do you personally prepare yourself mentally and physically for a race?
I try to keep my warm-up similar to how I warm up for practice with some light jogging, drills and strides.  Mentally I'll lay the race out in my head and visualize me completing my goal.  When I have teammates competing in the same event we'll say a prayer.

Pre-race superstition
I'll usually have a green sock on my left and a pink one on my right.

Most memorable race?
My goal for junior year was to run a 52 second 400.  Every race I thought it would be the one, but instead, it was just steady improvement.  At the Davis Invite however, I had no expectations.  It was a hard training week and my legs were exhausted, but shortly after competing I found out I had run a 52.59 which was a big PR for me and US#1 at the time.  I was on cloud nine for a while after that.  This really kept me motivated through the rest of the season.

Where are you at on college decisions?
I'm joining my sister at BYU in the fall and couldn't be more excited!

What are your top 3 goals this season?
I injured my knee in November and was recovering during indoor, so I'm excited to be able to be back on the track this season. My biggest goal is just to stay away from injury.  Later in the season once I've completed a bit more I'll focus more on time and goals but for right now I don't want to make any expectations for myself and just have fun with senior year.
