Salute To Seniors: Haley Tanne (Pleasant Grove)

Haley Tanne is the defending Great Southwest Champion in the steeple chase and she is one of the best 2k Steeple Chase runners in the country.  During her senior year, Tanne led the Pleasant Grove women to a great XC season which saw them claim the first ever Utah State 6A Team Title.  Haley finished in 3rd with a time of 18:12.20 on the extremely difficult Sugar House Course.  She placed 43rd at NXR-SW and again helped her team to a 5th place finish in the Region!

What was your most memorable race/throw/jump/vault/moment?

The most memorable race BY FAR was cross country state!  I can remember everything about that day and could even walk you through my race and what was going through my head.  My team was able to take the win and it was the most amazing experience ever!!

Who would you consider your biggest competition over your four years?

Abby Jensen for sure. At the end of this cross country season, I felt like we were always neck and neck when it came to the finish!

What was your greatest accomplishment?

I already mentioned the state cross country meet, but besides that, In Pleasant Grove, we have this long hill that is straight up for 1.3 miles that we call the Reaper (Let me tell you, the name is very appropriate ;) )  If you get certain times you can earn a shirt (Girls-12:00, Boys-10:00). One day, I was feeling good, so I decided to run with the boys, and I was able to break their Reaper time and it felt so good!

If you could do it all over again what would you change about your running career in high school?

Honestly, I am so happy with what I put in and for the most part what came out, but one thing that definitely needed to change was my running attire Freshman year!  Wow. I look at pictures from then and I just about gag haha. I raced in sketchers, long shorts, and these awful sunglasses, I honestly don't know how I ran the times I did with a uniform like that!

What were the most difficult obstacles you had to overcome?

Definitely low ferritin, you would really never expect something like a tiny protein would affect your body SO much!!  It was so inconsistent and when it hit me, it hit me hard. It was honestly so mentally exhausting because at some points, I just didn't know what to expect before a race because the symptoms don't show up gradually but just all of a sudden.

What will you miss the most?

I will definitely miss rainy mountain runs with my girls!!  We would jump in all the puddles, and paint our bodies with the mud, and dance in the rain and it was honestly the greatest!!

What advice would you give to younger athletes?

ALWAYS give it everything you've got, because you never know when an injury or something crazy will interrupt your season.  No. Regrets.

What influence has your coach had with respect to your performance and overall life goals?

My Coach is honestly one of my biggest role models.  Not only has he trained me well as an athlete, but he has been such a positive influence on my life. The biggest thing he has left with me, is that he taught me to give your all in everything you do.  One time in a 1600m race, I slowed down right before the finish. I was only a second off of a state time and my coach would not let me live that down--trust me! He even found the video to show me how I totally could have gotten the time down haha.  But even though it drove me crazy sometimes, I never slowed down at the finish after that!!

What are your college plans?

Southern Utah University!  I am honestly so excited! The team has already reached out to me and I already feel like a T-Bird!!  The girls team next year is looking super promising, and we are hoping to make nationals this year!

I would say thank you to my family and team for supporting me so well, but even just other coaches from around my region who have been so kind whether it's advice that has helped me so much, or a hug after a bad race.
