How to get your athletes ranked.

There are now ONLY three ways to get every athlete's performance into the UT rankings

Effective April 20th, we will add ALL athlete performances from meet results that conform to any one of the following three formats:

1. Hy-Tek

2.  RaceTab

(free from MileSplit. Video tutorial for adding results below)

3.  MileSplit Excel Template

(sample image below)

Some of you know how much time we spend working on the rankings. Last year in many sites, we had several volunteers who helped put more than 7000 perfomances in one-at-a-time. This year, our founder/developer Jason Byrne has developed a way to EASILY get Excel results formatted in a specific way, into the rankings. While it has enabled us to get virtually every performance from this past cross country, indoor and now outdoor season into the rankings, it has taken away time from other site coverage and improvements - plus my other full-time job as COO and Marketing Director for the MileSplit Network. On average, Excel results not formatted like the sample below take between 2-3 hours per meet to convert. That has cost me two or more days per week.

I simply don't have the time to devote to this one aspect of the site. I am working hard to post Utah results but often I find myself having to rewrite an entire results which is just insane and unfair. I am asking you to help me by taking responsibility for your meets and athletes.

So, the bottom line is,  all large meet performances received in either Hy-Tek or RaceTab will be put into the state rankings. Plus, all Excel results formatted like the image below, will have each performance added as well.

For meets not meeting these formats, we will, of course, post all results... and we'll still look for top state performances to add to the rankings by hand. So please ask your meet director to take the time to get the results to us in a way that EVERY athlete can be ranked.

(In case you think this is unusual, most states on the MileSplit Network get their results in Hy-Tek or RaceTab. A few states even mandate Hy-Tek. Don't I wish?)

Approved MileSplit Excel Format

Note: Use proper event names, each column needs a title with each event, such as Place, Name Team and Mark. Numbers are required for place. For relays, leave name blank and with individual events, use full names please. For times, use tenths to indicate hand timed, and hundredths for FAT only. For field mark, use the format: 35-10.75. If there are minor tweaks, no problem. Any questions, email don@penntrackxc.com.

RaceTab Tutorial

Honestly, it drives me crazy every time that I get results that have been hand-typed into Word or Excel or some other crazy format. I certainly appreciate the results being sent in any form! Don't get me wrong! But I know that what I am witnessing is just a bunch of wasted effort.

First of all, it means either I have to spend a lot of time retyping or reformatting the results OR it means that I won't have time so those kids never get in the rankings. Second of all, I know that with actually less effort that coach could have gotten them into RaceTab. And they would have been perfectly formatted, would have scored the meet for them, and I would be able to get all of those results into the athlete pages and rankings.

So I decided to make a short, quick tutorial of how to quickly set up a meet and start inputting results. Even some of you RaceTab veterans may not have realized how easy it really is.

The first step is to download and install RaceTab, you can always get the latest info and download the latest version of RaceTab at www.racetablive.com. Sorry Mac users, the current version is Windows only... but we may have be Mac compatible with the next release.

Once you have it installed, watch the tutorial below. Please note this is just for your basic meet where you want to hand-type in the results. Nothing fancy, just getting the job done!

Good for you, Don! I decided to do this last year in Florida and I rarely get meets that are not Hytek or RaceTab. With RaceTab being so easy (easier/faster than hand-typing otherwise) and free there is no reason not to.

If a meet director doesn't care enough to do it right then you better bet the kids and parents and other coaches will! And I tell them to ask the meet director nicely to get the results sent in and if they don't then show them your disapproval by skipping their meet next year. It is very important to so many people that all of their performances for the kids are recognized... not just the elites.
