The 2012 Utah State Cross Country Championships were the fastest ever held on the current Sugarhouse course. For the boys, 8 of the 15 fastest individual times ever run on the Sugarhouse course were run in 2012. The 5A Junior and Senior Records fell as well as the 4A Sophomore, Junior and Senior Records. As for team times, the 3A and 4A records fell, and teams from all divisions combined for 6 of the 14 fastest team total times ever. For the girls, 4 of the 15 fastest individual times ever were run last season, and three of those four girls are returning this season. 5 of the 8 all time fastest team totals were run in 2012.
More could be said about last seasons record performances, but the real reason I bring it up is to ask the question, what is in store for this year? American Fork boys own the record books for team times, with first, second, third and fifth fastest all time set over the last 4 years. This season they appear on average to be considerably faster than last year. Behind them, the team total times across the board look faster than last year, so I expect more records to fall this Wednesday. 7 teams have ever broken 80 minutes as a team at the state meet, and there are close to that many that are poised to do it this week. Along with the Boys team record, the Boys individual record might be in jeopardy. Kramer Morton is #5 all time on the list, and is well improved from last season. Connor Mcmillan ran an unreal 14:32 at the Region 4 championships. Connor Mantz ran 14:32 as well at his region meet. Add in the great number of sub 15 runners this season, and it is the perfect storm for a record breaking day.
The girls teams look ready to take down the records as well. Davis girls are the #1 team in the nation right now. They are led by Freshman Aubrey Argyle and Senior Taylor Cox. Argyle won the BYU Autumn Classic as well as the Region 1 championship and will look to take down the 5A freshman record, and any other record she can in the process. Ogden girls have a lower team average so far this season, and that is thanks in part to Sarah Feeny, who looks to better the records she set last season. Lucy Biles holds the Sopohomore 4A record, and now will be 5A and looking for records there as well. She is on a great winning streak and is a very strong favorite for a record setting run on Wednesday.
