Utah Boys compete very well at Great Southwest Classic

Boys from all around the state made the trek to New Mexico to represent Utah at the Great Southwest Classic. The athletes had the chance to compete against athletes from all around the country, all the way from Florida to Nevada.

The top performance on the weekend for Utah goes to Jake Heslington. Heslington recently graduated from Timpanogos High School and will be taking his talents down the road to Provo where he will compete for BYU this fall. He won the boys 2000m Steeple in meet record fashion, and came back the next day to win the boys 1 mile run.

Event by event breakdown of the top Utah competitors.

Boys 100m Dash- The elite boys 100m Dash saw Trayvon Bromell of Florida run an amazing wind aided 9.99 for the win. Jacopo Spano ended up 3rd in the non-seeded boys 100m Dash with a season best time of 10.67(w).

Boys 200m Dash- Josh Espinosa was 4th in the boys 200m Dash non seeded event, running a time of 21.63. He was the top Utah competitor in the event. Jacopo Spano was 6th with a time of 21.82.

Boys 400m Dash- Riverton stars Clay Lambourne, Michael Bluth, and Brandon Walker got the chance to run against some very strong competition from Florida and Louisiana. Bluth was the 6th finisher with a time of  48.46 with Lambourne right behind  in 7th with a time of 48.88. Walker was 10th at 49.28.

Boys 800m Run- Utah State Champions Sam Sorenson and Andrew Brewer found themselves in a very fast boys 800m run. Blair Henderson of Louisiana won with a time of 1:53.00. Brewer was 2nd with a time of 1:53.61 and Sorenseon was 4th with a time of 1:54.94.

Boys 1 mile Run- Jake Heslington capped off his great season winning double gold at the Great Southwest Classic. He won the boys 1 Mile run with a  time of 4:23.99. Brayden McLelland was 4th in the event at 4:27.93 with Jordan Cross 5th in 4:28.24.

Boys 3200m Run- Luis Martinez of New Mexico beat out a very deep Utah team in the boys 3200m. Conner Mantz was 2nd with a time of 9:32.51 with Chuk Mitchell 3rd in 9:40.08.

Boys 110 Hurdles- Lance Allen was the top Utah competitor in the event, finishing 12th with a time of 15.02.

Boys 300 Hurdles- Mitch Mordaunt and Cam Dopp battled to be Utahs top representative in the boys 300 Hurdles. Mordaunt was the top finisher in 9th place with a time of 39.67 with Dopp 10th in 39.74.

Boys 2000m Steeple Chase- Jake Heslington Broke the meet record in the boys 2k Steeple as he won by a landslide. His time of 6:02.50 bettered the previous record of 6:05.06. Chuk Mitchell and Connor Mcmillan rounded out the Utah sweep with 2nd and 3rd in a very tight finish, 6:12.32 to 6:12.38.

Boys 4x100m relay- Utah Boys put together a 6th place team with a  time of 41.41 with Florida winning the event of 40.11.

Boys 4x200m Relay- Louisiana got the win in the 4x200m relay with a time of 1:24.44. Utah was 7th with a time of 1:28.91.

Boys 4x400m Relay- Florida and Missouri had a great battle in the 4x400m Relay running 3:11.08 and 3:11.15. both amazing times. Utah was able to take 3rd over Texas with a time of 3:16.35.

Boys 4x800m Relay- Utah put together great 4x800 team, running 7:48.68,  but their race was not enough to match the new meet record performance of team Missouri 7:39.34.

Boys Shuttle Hurdles- Utah grabbed 2nd in the boys shuttle hurdles behind Arizona. Their team time was 58.95

Boys High Jump- The top jumper in the meet, Logan Brittain, cleared 7 feet on the day. The top Utah competitor was Brenan Thomas clearing 6’6” and placing 7th in the meet.

Boys Pole vault- Mitch Kalinin has dominated competition in Utah all season. This weekend he got some good competition to push him to greater heights. He cleared 15’1” which was good for 5th place.

Boys Long Jump- Jadon Pace was the top Utah athlete in the meet, placing 5th in the meet and jumping 22’7.75”.

Boys Shot Put- Seth White was the top Utah competitor in the boys shot put with a throw of 51’4.5” which was good enough for 8th place in the meet.

Boys Discus- Blake Kvarfordt was the top Utah thrower in the discus with a mark of 154’10”.  His throw was good enough for 8th in the meet.

Boys Javelin Throw- Jeff Rowley represented Utah very well with his throw of 180’4” which was good enough for 2nd overall in the meet. The winning throw of 184’8” by Andrew Henn of Kansas.

Boys Decathlon- Cameron Call and Tyler Diaz battled very well in the boys decathlon, with only 4 points separating the two of them after 10 events of competition. Call was 7th overall with Diaz 8th. Call had the top mark in the decathlon high jump en route jumping 6’3”.
