Regions 5-8 Recap

Region 5 Championships

Meet Results

Region 5 was hosted at Sky View High School. On the boys side the home team prevailed thanks to a great meet by Sophomore distance star Conner Mantz and Junior thrower Seth White. Mantz won the boys 3200m in 9:31, and also pulled off a very close win over Adam Hendrickson of Box Elder, 4:21.05 to 4:21.30. White won double gold in both the Discus and the Shot Put. His throw in the Discus of 150’6” was a personal best and is top 10 in the state this year.

On the Girls side of things the home team couldn’t quite match the strength and depth of Box Elder. The Bee’s won 9 of the 16 girls events overall, which contributed huge to the win. Hannah Malone won the Girls 1600 to contribute to the team title and she missed her personal best by just .29 seconds. Brenna Porter of Sky View did all she could to help challenge Box Elder, Winning the 100 Hurdles, 300 Hurdles, 200m Dash, and the Long Jump.

Region 6 Championships

Meet Results

Woods Cross played host to the Region 6 Championships. The home track advantage was apparent as the Wildcats won both the Girls and Boys competition.

The Wildcat Boys have had a fantastic season in the sprints, setting multiple state records, including resetting their own 4x100 Meter Relay 3 weekends in a row. 66 of the Wildcats 190 points came in the Sprint events, but they actually had a very balanced attack. Along with the 66 points in the sprints, the wildcats scored 42 points in the Hurdles, 33 points in the hurdles, 28 in the Distance events, and 21 in the Relays.

Tomy Gutierrez of East had one of the best meets individually, winning the 800m in 1:59, the 1600m in 4:19, and 3200m in 9:34.

The Girls competition was closer than the Boys, with Woods Cross beating Bountiful by a 18 points, 157 to 139. Though the Wildcats boys used the sprints to propel them to the win, the Girls were deepest in the Distance events.

Region 8 Championships

Meet Results

The Orem Tigers played host to the Region 8 Championships. With strong competition coming in from every direction for the Boys team title, the day was up for grabs heading into the final event. Maple Mountain held a half point lead over Mountain View.  All the Bruins could do is beat Maple Mountain and the team title was theirs. They did just that, winning the final event and the team title at the same time.

The top individual performance of the meet goes to Jake Heslington. Fresh off his new state record at BYU last week, Jake won the 1600m and then came back to run a staggering 1:55.46 to hold off Issac Faux of Maple Mountain.

On the Girls Side of things, Nicole Laws of Provo had a fantastic meet, setting personal bests in the 100h, 300h, Long Jump and High Jump. She won 3 of the 4 events and was second in the Long Jump. In the end no individual or team was strong enough to keep pace with the Orem Tigers as they won by nearly 100 points. Summer Harper contributed big  to the tigers win with her double gold in the 1600m and 3200m.
