The common held belief in track in Utah is that in order to post great marks you have to go out of state. While that may be somewhat true in the distance events, plenty of Utah athletes proved that theory wrong as this weekend at the UHSTCA they put up marks as good as any.
One of the most exciting moments in the meet had to be when Austin Kafentzis of Jordan missed breaking his own Javelin state record by a mere 5 inches. His record, set last season, is 199’5” and his throw on Saturday was 199’ even.
Another exciting performance goes out to Andrew Brewer of Bingham High beat cross country state champion Kramer Morton by a mere .20 seconds, 4:24.2 to 4:24.4. He came back a few hours later to win the 800 meters by half that margin. He beat out Nathan Merchant of Jordan 1:57.90 to 1:58.00
Kaysha Love of Herriman continued her winning ways. She currently holds the fastest time in the state in the 100m dash at 12.01 and on Saturday she won the meet at 12.18. She also won the 200m in 25.70. She capped off a great meet with jump of 5’5”
In the 300 Hurdles Mindy Stapel of Springville ran 45.64 which is the 3rd best in the state so far.
In the Discus Megan Glassman of Park City threw 131-1, which is a state leader.
Megan and her sister Chrissy also went 1-2 in the Javelin. Both marks were just short of their season bests, but still good enough to be considered nationally elite. Also kinda cool cause they’re sisters.
In the High Jump Audrey Muir of Union cleared 5’8” which is a tie for #1 in the state this year and Kaysha Love cleared 5’5” which is a tie for 3 in state.
In the boys Pole Vault Mitch Kalinin of Bingham cleared 14’6” which is half a foot better than anyone else in the state. Coming up behind him with an also impressive vault was Benjamin Schulties of West Jordan clearing 14 feet.
In the Discus Roy Mulitalo of Herriman threw 156 feet which is the second best mark in the state this year. Just behind him at 152’3” was Jacob Asay of Bingham.
In the Shot Put Lavontae Calhoun of Jordan threw 54 feet 2 inches which is the second best time in the state this year.
