Salute To Seniors: Kate Heywood (Morgan)

Want To Be Our Next Senior Salute? Find Out How!

Name: Kate Heywood

School: Morgan

What was your most memorable race/throw/jump/vault/moment?

My most memorable race was freshman year at state cross country. It was the first time that the Morgan girls won state so it was a really cool moment for our team. I placed top ten and that was the first time I think I realized I had the potential to do well in the sport.

What was your greatest accomplishment?

My greatest accomplishment was probably this year in state track. It was surreal getting to cross that tape three times and do my part for my team. At the end of the meet, we got to hoist a trophy together that we all worked super hard for.

If you could do it all over again what would you change about your running career in high school?

I wouldn't take for granted the experiences I had and the trips I got to go on with my team. Some of my favorite memories I had were those trips to Bob Firman, Footlocker, and NXR.

What were the most difficult obstacles you had to overcome?

I was injured last summer and didn't run for basically three months so it was hard to go into the cross country season with a good mindset. I cross-trained and made it work with the help of physical therapists and my coach.

What will you miss the most?

I will miss the friendships I made on the team and the bond we all had.

What advice would you give to younger athletes?

Make the most of all the experiences you have!

What influence has your coach had with respect to your performance and overall life goals?

I wouldn't have ever considered running in college if it weren't for my coach. He helped me see my potential and always believed in me through the ups and downs. He taught us how to set goals and be all in for whatever we set our mind to. He also taught us to work towards a cause greater than ourselves and not make excuses. These lessons are all applicable to life outside of running and I'm super grateful for all he's done. Like

What are your college plans?

I'm super excited to run for UVU this fall!

Who would you like to say 'thank you' to?

All the track and cross country coaches at Morgan, Coach Houle at UVU, and all my rad teammates.

Is there anything else you'd like to add?

This one's for my girlies at Morgan: SIDTT :)
