The 7 Can't Miss Boys Races At Great Southwest

3. Boys 400

Who: Sean Burrell, Nathaniel McRae, Jonah Vigil, Kennedy Lightner

Why: After six boys broke 46 and 24 more broke 47 seconds in 2017, it's been a relative down year in the 400m nationally. Only 18 boys have gone under 47 seconds in 2018, and just two have broken 46. But one of those athletes goes by the name of Sean Burrell, and he'll be looking for an even faster time than his 45.74 from the Louisiana state championships. Burrell set a freshman class record at Great Southwest last year, but can he offer a sophomore record? That seems a little out of reach, considering it stands at 45.14 and last was achieved by Obea Moore in 1995. But Burrell has nothing to lose, and he has history at this meet. McRae, a junior at Conroe Oak Ridge (TX), owns a US No. 17 time of 46.97 and Vigil, of Taos (NM), is right behind him at US No. 18 with an effort of 46.99. Lightner, a junior from North Little Rock (AR), is the wildcard. He ran well over the indoor season and owns a best of 47.29, but he hasn't gone under 48 in 2018.
