The Scoop: Dominant Sprinters, Quarter-Mile Futures And State Championships Galore

Can Sean Burrell Go After Walton And Cooper In The 400m?

The national leaderboard in the boys 400m could be ready for a shakeup, too.

We know Miami Norland (FL) High's Tyrese Cooper, who leads the nation with a 46.40 quarter effort from this weekend's Sam Burley Hall of Fame Invitational, will inevitably be running 46s and eventual 45s along with Miramar (FL) High's Jamal Walton, who scored a junior class record with his 44.99 time at the Pan American Junior Championships in 2017, and Georgia's Brian Herron.

But is anyone even within striking distance?

After this weekend, that could be Zachary (LA) High sophomore Sean Burrell

The Louisiana underclassman, who finished last year with a US No. 4 of 46.19, continues to drop time and could go after Obea Moore's sophomore class record of 45.14 after landing a US No. 2 effort of 46.65 at the West Feliciana Saints Relays.

He started the season a year ago at 47.93 and is coming off an indoor campaign where he improved nearly two seconds at the distance year-over-year.

There's also Clinton (MS) High's Kristopher Moore, Brookwood (GA) High's Nick Ramey and Fayette County (GA) High's Trey Johnson to consider. Moore was one of a few swan stories over the indoor campaign -- he still holds a US No. 7 time -- Moore is already off to a smashing start. He went 47.71 at the Southern Miss High School Invitational, starting his season two seconds ahead of where he began in 2017.

Ramey still holds the indoor US No. 2 with a mark of 47.19, while Johnson is US No. 3 with a 47.20. But both athletes would be kind of coming out of nowhere. Johnson only had the 21st fastest time from 2017 in 47.23, while Ramey had the 31st with his 47.39.

And then there are quarter-milers like Rice Lake (WI) High's Kenny Bednarek (46.19), Newton (GA) High's Elija Godwin (46.23) and North Canyon (AZ) High's Tyrees Moulton (46.51) to also keep in mind.
