4A State Championship Recap Kyle Perry May 19, 2013

The Utah State Track and Field Championships concluded this afternoon on a rainy day in Provo. Woods Cross High School won the boys 4A team title in the final event of the day. The Wildcats, scoring 85 points, beat out Herriman who scored 79 points.

The Girls team title went to Herriman on the backs of great performances by their underclassmen Kaysha Love and Lucy Biles. The individual events were exciting as well. Here is our event-by-event breakdown of the action.

The Utah High School State Track and Field Championships concluded today in Provo. It was an exciting day of competition in every classification. The weather was bi-polar as it was pouring rain one minute and sunny and hot the next. The athletes seemed more focused on winning a state championship than they were about the weather. The team titles on both the Girls and Boys side went to Davis High School as the Darts made it a three-peat.  The individual events were exciting as well. State Track Day 1: 1600m Finals Excite as State Records Fall Kyle Perry May 17, 2013

Provo, Utah- Day one of the 2013 Utah State Track and Field Championships took place today at the Robison Track Complex in Provo.  The competitors got to deal with blustery conditions and scattered showers on the day as a storm moved through the valley. Most events had preliminary rounds today to qualify for tomorrows finals, but the two finals on the track today provided plenty of excitement for everyone in attendance. On the track first was the 1600m Run, where 10 state champions were crowned, 5 in the Boys and 5 in girls.

The 2a Girls State Championship is going to be a very exciting one to watch. North Summit Holds the edge in the rankings, but they are close enough that when considering prelims and rounds and the potential for false starts or a dropped baton, any thing can happen and Richfield is very capable of an upset.

2013 Utah State Championship: 2a Boys Preview Kyle Perry May 16, 2013

The Richfield Boys look very tough this season as they look to win another state championship this weekend on the track. In the virtual meet we ran on the competition, Richfield came out over 100 points ahead of the closest competitor, North Summit. If there is one thing that is great about track and field is no meet is won on paper, and your personal bests don’t get you anywhere if you don’t bring it on race day. That being said, Richfield would have to see a pretty big meltdown before an upset became a likely possibility.

The Girls 1a state championship looks to be a great competition. With Panguitch favored, if only their individuals can live up their rankings. Whitney Orton and Catania Holman look to contribute big points for Panguitch as well as Chesney Campbell. Layton Christian has some very talented athletes as well as Wayne which could make it a great three way battle for the team title.

Riverton High School played host to the Region 4 championships on Wednesday. The Riverton Boys made the most of the home track advantage, as the women couldn't match pace with a very strong Bingham team. Emily Rich of Bingham made a big contrubution to the Miners cause as she won the 800, 1600, and 3200 on the day. She did so in impressive fashion running 2:17 in the 800, and 5:09 in the 1600

This past weekend in Provo, Brigham Young University hosted their annual BYU High School Outdoor Invitational. The meet is always a big producer of top marks, and this year the performances were even better than some expected, as state records fell in what seemed like every event on the day.  Some of the best competition came from Girls Field events, where every girl laid her best on the line.

5 New State Records Set at BYU Invite Friday Kyle Perry May 03, 2013

 

The UHSAA updated the state record list just yesterday, and it took all of 24 hours for it to be out of date. 4 utah athletes broke a state recrod in their classification in the 3200 on friday. 

This morning at the BYU Invite Ben Saarel Broke the 3a State Record in the 3200m convincingly as he broke the previous record by 5 seconds. The record was held by Luke Puskedra set in 2008 at 8:54, today be ran 8:49.08.

The BYU High School Invitational is likely the biggest meet of the year. With nearly all the best competition from around the state converging in Provo, this year could be the best BYU invite ever. It comes just one weekend after Davis hosted their invitational that saw 4 State Records, a mark that would be hard to beat.

 

BYU INVITE Day 1&2: Heptathlon, Decathlon, and Steeple Kyle Perry May 03, 2013

Day 1 of the BYU invite kicked off Wednesday in Provo with the Multi events, where the winner is crowned Utah’s Greatest Athlete. With 5 events on Wednesday for the boys and 4 events for the girls,  they came back again Thursday to finish the rest of their events. Also on the day was the 2000m steeple chase.

Milesplit Allstars Feature Athlete of the Week: Austin Brower Kyle Perry May 01, 2013

Austin Brower is a Junior distance runner from West Lake High School. He has had a very impressive season so far, improving nearly every time he steps on the track. This past weekend he ran a double that very few in the history of the state have, first running 4:15 in the 1600m and then coming back and running 1:55 in the 800m. We chose him as the feature athlete of the week, and had a chance to catch up with Austin, see what doing that’s working so well, and get to know him a little better. Here’s our conversation.

Anden Lyman sets Javelin State Record Kyle Perry Apr 30, 2013

This weekend at the Southern Utah University Coliseum Championships, Anden Lyman of Enterprise High smashed the 2a state record in the girl’s javelin. Her throw of 138 feet 1 inch is more than 8 inches farther than the standing record. Mandee Christensen of Manti set the record earlier this season at the Juab invitational and it stood for a mere two weeks.

State Records fall at Davis Invite Kyle Perry Apr 28, 2013

 

The Davis Invitational lived up to the hype with fantastic performances coming in across the board. The most significant performances were the 4 state records that fell on the weekend. Three records came on the girls side of things. Megan Glassman of Park City set the all divisions state record in the Javelin, Kaysha Love of Herriman set the 4a record in the 200m dash, and Shea Martinez  of Davis tied the record in the 800m Run. On the Boys side, Woods Cross broke the state record with a time of 41.95

New State Record Set at Woods Cross Kyle Perry Apr 20, 2013

 

The Woods Cross Wildcats boys 4x100m relay team sprinted their way into the record book Friday night as they broke the state record in the 4x100 relay with a time of 42.40. The previous record of 42.41 was held by Timpview High set in 2007.
