Weekend Preview: Herriman XC Invite Kyle Perry Sep 13, 2013

-

Herriman High School will play host to their annual Cross Country invitational Friday night. The races will be run on the traditional course, with a few slight changes from last year. Apparently some building in the area has changed the location of the start and finish slightly, but this should only make things better. The course is known as one of the hardest in the state, and many will tell you that no other course can compare in difficulty. In fact, it may be one of the hardest courses in the entire country. Adding to the level of difficulty is the fact that it has been rainy, and the course is entirely trail, so it could be a big muddy mess this afternoon.

History repeated itself this weekend in Cedar City with Aimee Bryson of Cedar High School winning another SUU Cross Country Championship. Her winning time of 19:09 was 10 seconds faster than her winning time on the same course last season. Kamryn Watts of Hurricane was second for the second year in a row with a time of 20:17. SUU to host High School XC Championship tomorrow morning in Cedar City. Kyle Perry Aug 23, 2013

The Southern Utah Thunderbirds will be hosting their XC invitational Saturday morning at the Bicentennial Park in Cedar City.  Most of the top teams from the southern half of the state will be competing. With a 30% chance of thunderstorms tomorrow in Cedar City, the meet has the potential to be a messy one, which if you think about it, is what Cross Country is all about. No matter the conditions, there is one thing you can be sure of; this meet will be a great battle between all of the top talent from Cedar City, St. George, and the surrounding areas.

Meet Preview: Highland Invite Kyle Perry Aug 22, 2013

Up to this point in the year, rankings and predictions have been purely speculation. This weekend should provide real insight into how summer training went. For some we will find it went well, and for others there will be a lot of work to do. For a lot of teams, this weekend will be the season opener. Some opened at the Premier invite and the Hurricane invite, but pretty much everyone will be racing this weekend. Today at Sugarhouse Park, Highland High School will host the Highland Invitational. Currently on Runnercard there are 50 teams entered, so it should be a big day.

2013 Cross Country Season Preview: 5A Boys Kyle Perry Aug 19, 2013

Last season was one of the most impressive in the history of the state. Kicking it off in the fall was American Fork placing higher than any team from the state ever had at Nike Cross Nationals. The exciting XC season was followed up by an equally impressive track season.  Can the 5A boys pick up where they left off last season?  Here are just a few of the teams and individuals that are ready for a great season.

2013 Cross Country Season Preview: 5A Girls Kyle Perry Aug 18, 2013

Heading in to the season it is very difficult to guess what a lot of teams might do. For the 5A season preview I took a little different approach. Obviously there are a lot of teams that are looking to climb the boards and stir things up. As the season progresses that picture will become very clear, but for now I have broken down only a few teams that I think have the makings of a podium fight. If there is a team you think should be in the mix let me know why.

2013 Cross Country Season Preview: 4A Boys and Girls Kyle Perry Aug 16, 2013

The 4A classification should be an exciting one in 2013, with some significant changes in case you hadn’t heard. Ogden, Wasatch, and Judge will make the move up to 4A, Kearns coming down from 5A, as well as the addition of the newly built Corner Canyon High School.  Moving out of the classification and in to 5A will be West Lake and Herriman and Hillcrest.

Great Southwest Distance Entry Lists Kyle Perry May 27, 2013

2013 has been one of the greatest years for distance running in the state of Utah. Not only at the front of the pack, with 10 new state records in the distance events alone, but the depth of the talent is the most impressive. Times that would win state most years had trouble even earning a medal this year. The depth of the Utah talent will be shown this upcoming weekend at the Great Southwest Classic in Albuquerque, NM.

Ben Saarel wins Adidas Dream Mile Kyle Perry May 25, 2013

Ben Saarel of Park City has a ferocious kick, and used it to destroy the field in a come from behind win Saturday at the Adidas Dream Mile. It truly was an all-star pack, with 9 athletes in the field breaking 4:10.  Ben had to go toe to toe with the likes of Foot Locker Champ Edward Cheserek, Arizona’s Bernie Montoya, Henry Wynne and more. Saarel’s winning time of 4:02.72 is the fastest ever run by a Utah athlete in High School, beating out Brad Nye's 4:03.04 from last year.  The win caps off a fantastic season for Ben, in which he set the all classification state record in the 800, 1600, and 3200m, as well as winning every race he entered except for his 3rd place finish at Mt. Sac.  He will take his talents to University of Colorado this fall where he will be a contender for an NCAA title for years to come.

Now that state is over, what does the future hold for the track and field athletes of Utah? For some, this marks the end of the road, with graduation just around the corner. For others the competition will continue next season, either in college, or for the underclassman with cross country season. Lastly, there are an elite few runners who have been invited to run at prestigious meets around the country

1A State Championship Recap Kyle Perry May 21, 2013

The 1A State Track and Field Championships provided great entertainment over the weekend as Panguitch won both the Boys and Girls state titles. The girls of Panguitch won, scoring 125 points over Wayne, who scored 91.5, and Monticello with 74. A key to Panguitch's dominance was Freshman Whitney Orton, who single handedly added 36 points to the cause, winning three events.

Panguitch also won the boys competition, though not as comfortably as they may have anticipated. Rich put in a pretty good fight, keeping coaches counting points late in the day, but in the end Panguitch pulled away. They scored 107 points with Rich close behind in 94 points.

The 2a State Championship had two very different story lines in the girls competition and the boys competition. The boys team competition was the Richfield show as they dominated the meet winning by over 100 points over North Summit with 70.5 points and Emery with 44.5. Capping off the team title, Richfield pulled out a very exciting win in the Boys 4x400m relay.

3A State Championship Recap Kyle Perry May 19, 2013

On a very rainy Saturday morning the final day of the 2013 UHSAA state track championships kicked off with the 3A Girls on the track for the 3200. After the race Park City team members could be seen calculating exactly what needed to happen for the Miners to secure a team title. Whatever those calculations were, they were spot on as the Miners won the state championship with 93 points over Cedar High School who grabbed 76 points.  Megan Glasmann was one big keys to Park City’s success as she won the Javelin and grabbed second in the Discus.
