While most track athletes in Utah will be taking the weekend off, Davis high school will send a small contingent to Boise to run at the New Balance West Invitational.

Among the group headed to Boise will be multi-time state champion, Shea Martinez. Martinez was slated to run the 800m at the BYU Indoor Invitational last week, but was hampered by a sore hamstring and decided to wait an extra week.

Martinez has personal bests of 4:56 in the 1600m, 57.53 in the 400m and 2:10.20 in the 800m. But a video posted by Davis Coach Corbin Talley shows Martinez running a 2:07 800m in a time trial (click here to see the video). What will she be able to accomplish this year? Only time will tell, but it will be interesting to see how well she opens up the season.

Coach Talley also shared what Davis uses the indoor season for and what the team’s plans are for the indoor season (video interview here).

Talley says his team uses indoors as a "springboard for outdoors," but still get some intense workouts in during the winter. He also says they hope to send a group to New York City again to run at New Balance Indoor Nationals. Davis has gone to New York the past two seasons and last year came home with Brad Nye as a national champion. If Martinez can show what she did in that 2012 time trial, Davis High School could come home with a national champion for the second year in a row. Maybe this meet in Boise will be the "springboard" she needs to start her season and get to that point.
