UHSTCA Athlete of the Week

May 23, 2012

Each competitor worked very hard this season. Records were broken, events won, but only a few came out on top. Here are a few athletes whose marks made them not only top in various meets and events, but also top in the season. We’d like to recognize these individuals for being incredible athletes of the season!

Large School Female Track Athlete of the Season: Brenna Porter, Jr. Sky View

Brenna Porter finished a very successful season with a personal best 300M Hurdle time of the season of 42.25 seconds at the 4A State Track & Field Championships. Brenna took the gold for Sky View in the 100M Hurdles and 300M Hurdles at state and also won 3 Athlete of the Week awards this year. With her senior season remaining she has potential to perform very well next year.

Large School Male Track Athlete of the Season: Cam Dopp, So. Woods Cross

Dopp had an exceptional race at state to finish off the season giving him the prestigious award of Athlete of the Season. He ran the 300 Hurdles in an incredible time of 37.88 which not only gave him the 4A state title but the best mark of the season.

Small School Female Track Athlete of the Season: Erica Birk, Sr. North Summit

Erica Birk's senior season ended with a great showing at state for North Summit. She took home the gold in the 800M, 1600M, and 3200M at state giving her team 30 points to help them to the 2A State title. In her senior season Erica was Athlete of the Week 3 times and also beat the state record in the 1600M at the BYU Invite.

Small School Male Track Athlete of the Season: Ammon Mitchell, Jr. San Juan

Mitchell has had a great season and capped it all off with an awesome performance at state winning the 110 Hurdles race for 2A with a time of 14.87 nearly a second faster than second place! Mitchell’s time gave him 4th place in overall rankings behind all seniors so he will be one to watch next year!

Large School Female Field Athlete of the Season: Sarah Orr, Fr. Park City

This year’s large school female athlete of the season is Sarah Orr with her top jump of 5 feet 11 inches. She is a freshman going to Park City high school. Because of her age, she'll have more opportunities to do well in Track. We look forward to watching her next year!

Large School Male Field Athlete of the Season: Grant Evans, Sr., Springville

Grant has had an exceptional season in the shot put and has received athlete of the week honors previously. He finished off the season with a state title in the shot put with a 54 feet 2 inches throw. Evan's best mark of the season came from the Utah county invite where he threw a mark of 54 feet 11.5 inches.

Small School Female Field Athlete of the Season: McKayla Worthin, Sr. Emery

The next athlete comes from Emery high school. McKayla Worthin is the athlete of the season with her mark of 167 feet 3.75 in the Discus. She had a huge lead with almost 30 more feet than the second place competitor. It was a good way to finish off her senior year.

Small School Male Field Athlete of the Season: Sage Palmer Sr. Enterprise and Max Lewis Sr. Duchesne

These athletes both tied for the field athlete of the season award because they both had exceptional performances in the Javelin and Discus. Palmer who has had an incredible season consistently receiving athlete of the week honors finished up his senior season with first place in both the Javelin and the 100 meter dash for 2A schools at state. He had the top mark for small schools in the Javelin all season with 183 feet 6 inches. Lewis also finished up his high school career with a win in the Discus with a mark of 137 feet 2.5 inches. This mark was enough to give him Gold at state, but his best mark of the season which gives him the honor of being athlete of the season came from the BYU invitational where he threw 158 feet .75 inches.
