3A Boys: A Likely Battle to the Finish

Breaking down the prospects for Utah Track and Field 2012

At this point, only days before the opening of the official competitive season, it appears that 3A boys could be the tightest of all ten races for a state team title this spring.

Last year, Hurricane blew away the field in 3A boys, and the Tigers figure to be right back in the thick of things this year, but the main advantage they hold over the field at the moment is first-hand knowledge of what it takes to come up on top. That's something the other teams lack (or at least mostly lack).

Delta might qualify as a very slight preseason favorite, and the Rabbits hopes rest mostly with hurdler Weston Cropper and middle distance guys Tyler and Dane Nielson.

Hurricane returns three big contributors in sprinter Adam Thompson, thrower Brian Scott, and thrower Jake Nielson. It's likely, however, they'll need some individual point production beyond these three to repeat as champions this spring.

Desert Hills may have the greatest breadth of state scoring potential. led by high jumper Tyler Ott and hurdler Brad Wulfenstein.

Juab continues the Nielson family reunion theme by bringing Jake Nielson along as their biggest potential scoring threat to the state meet. Jake Nielson should be trouble in all three throwing events.

Wasatch looks for a big contribution by hurdler Cale Strong. But, like Desert Hills, Wasatch looks to be able to score a lot of state points in nickels and dimes. Eventually, the small change adds up.

Cedar's hopes hinge on the legs of middle distance runner Danny Stevenson. Ben Saarel's indoor season suggests he may be the one to put Park City over the hump of being a mid-tier team and into the company of top-tier teams.

Every last one of the above teams is in need of some bigger contributions from guys who made it to the state meet last year and didn't score, or maybe contributed one or two points at the state meet last spring. The team that does the best with these opportunities is likely to come out on top.
