Thomas Boyden continues his quest for Sub 4!

Thomas Boyden of Skyline currently holds the nation's (Official) fastest marks in the 1600m and 3200m when he won both events at the Snow Canyon Invitational back in march before the season was suspended until May 1st due to the Coronavirus (COVID-19).

Boyden ran a 4:05.16 which is the new all time state record passing two time NXN champion Casey Clinger's mark of 4:06.22.  Boyden came back the next day to run 8:50.65 in the 3200m which again passed Clinger's 5A State record mark of 8:57.90. Boyden's 8:50 is the 2nd fastest mark in Utah State history.  The current overall record holder is Ben Saarel of Park City who ran 8:49.08 back in 2013.  Carson Belnap of Stansbury also ran 8:51.99 for a new 4A State record passing Ryan Raff's mark of 8:54.09.

Since that 1600m race Boyden has had his eyes set on becoming the next high school athlete to break the sub 4 barrier.  All though schools have switched to online and practices are no longer being held, Thomas has managed to keep up his fitness.  On Friday March 10th, Thomas and a handful of other top local talent ran a time trial 1600m at Taylorsville High School.

Former high school teammate to Boyden and current runner for Utah Valley University Jared Gonzalez paced the Stanford commit through 800m. Boyden was on pace but then finished with a time of 4:09.33.  Still a respectable time given the altitude of 4,295 feet and a nasty wind.  Boyden is still optimistic and is more focused on the sub 4 attempt when he will time trial with Carson Belnap and Easton Allred of Corner Canyon in a couple of weeks.
