Salute to Seniors: Madison Moffitt (Timpanogos)

Madison Moffitt had a stellar senior year on top of an already impressive high school career.  In XC she ran solid times of 17:56.40 for 3 miles and 18:12.70 for a 5K.  In track she managed to PR in all of her events!  At the Region 8 Championships, Moffitt swept all of her events and she placed high at state finishing 3rd in the 800m and 1600m!  Madison is off to BYU this fall where she joins one of the deepest recruiting classes in the country.

What was your most memorable race/throw/jump/vault/moment?

There are way too many to count. My entire career of running has been a memorable moment. But if I had to narrow it down it would be the first time we won state. As a freshman we had taken second and the year before that as well. So coming in sophomore year we had goals. I was our 5th runner that year and coming in with the final score of our team and looking down at my card and seeing 1st place was priceless.

Who would you consider your biggest competition over your four years?

My competition has changed a lot throughout all 4 years of my running. But this senior year I feel like I had a solid group of girls, Heidi Sumsion, Carlee Hansen, Abby Jensen, Camille Winterton, and Alissa Fielding (we're now teammates so I'm stoked about this one, she's for sure going to push me).

What was your greatest accomplishment?

I've had a lot of personal accomplishments, having the ability to PR every season as well as break school records for XC courses as well as track events. It's been really cool to see my name move up on the Top Ten List. But my greatest accomplishment would be my entire career and where it has put me now. If someone would have told me freshman year that I would be a D1 athlete for one of the best schools in the nation I would have told them that they were crazy.

If you could do it all over again what would you change about your running career in high school?

I would not change a single thing.

What were the most difficult obstacles you had to overcome?

Mentality. Mentality can make or break absolutely anything and coming off freshman and sophomore year I had to really force myself out of my comfort zone and tell myself to suck it up. I had to tell myself that I was just as good as the top dogs and I had to get out there and show up too.

What will you miss the most?

Everything. High school cross country and track and field has had a tremendous impact on my life. It's been amazing. But I will miss the girls on my team and how chill they were. Never a dull moment! Just a bunch of girls that wanted to hit the trails half naked and sing as loud as we could. And I'll miss our dudes. They've been through a lot this season and I've always looked up to them. And I'll miss my coaches. Jody Benson- a second father to me and Brooke Davies, an older sister that I never had. I truly lucked out.

What advice would you give to younger athletes?

Never ever take advantage of anything. Because before you know it, it's all gone. Next time you roll your eyes at the sprinter kid who just got his new neon pink crocs, smile. Next time you're bent over a trash can throwing up, appreciate the pain. Next time your calf's are burning and you still have another mile up the hill, pump your arms harder. And next time your whole team can't even run because your're laughing so hard, take a mental picture of that. It's too precious not to enjoy it all.

What influence has your coach had with respect to your performance and overall life goals?

Everything. There's many, so many times my coaches have pulled me out of classes or told me to stay after to practice to yell at me for not using my talents. I've been in some icky situations and they knew about it before my parents did, telling me to shape up and work harder. They never ever let me skip on hurdle drills, weights, or abs. They made sure I was stretching, drinking water, eating healthy, maintaining a good sleep schedule and so forth. But most importantly expressed how important it was to work hard on the track and in the classroom.

What are your college plans?

Brigham Young University! Go cougs! I get butterflies everyday thinking about this opportunity and adventure I get to take this fall. That program is something else. And Coach Taylor has really turned things around over there. I cannot wait to work with her and every single girl on that team. Especially the girls that I got recruited with. They're already my best friends. Cannot wait to rep the Y!!!

Who would you like to say 'thank you' to?

Thank you to everyone I ever interacted with during my running career from teammates to coaches and competition. Everyone has made this truly a dream and I couldn't thank you enough.

Things I'd like to add:

GO COUGS!
