Athlete Spotlight: Karli Branch (Corner Canyon)

Karli Branch is one of the few people in the state who is a returning State Champion XC from last season.  Branch won the 5A race in a time of 17:51.40.  She then ran at Footlocker West where she missed qualifying by two spots finishing in 12th.  In track, Karli ran new PRs in every single one of her events and finished in the top 3rd in the 3200m.

How did you first get started running?
I first started running when a friend invited me to do the rec track club.  I did it for a year and then a few years later we both did the middle school team. 

Favorite Workout?
I love the hour of power. It is an hour long tempo run where you see how far you can go. I also love going on long mountain runs up corner canyon.

Least Favorite Workout?
I don't really like 600m repeats.  It is more of a workout we do during the track season.

How do you personally prepare yourself mentally and physically for a race?
The night before I take an epsom salt bath and eat fish and broccoli.  I realize that races are part of the process and I put trust in my training to prepare mentally.

Pre Race superstition 
I inherited the tradition of shaving my legs the night before a race to make you more "aerodynamic" from my sister.

Most memorable race?
My most memorable race was region of my freshman year because it was the first year corner canyon qualified for state and we all ran for each other.

Where are you at on college decisions?
It is too early for me to decide right now.  Hopefully after I go on visits I will be able to feel the place that is right for me.

What are your top 3 goals you wish to accomplish this season?
I want to defend the state championship and qualify for a national race.  I also want to go under 17:20 for three miles.
