Mia Manson Smashes US Freshman Pole Vault Record

Mia Manson knocked the stuffing out of the US freshman girls pole vault record today in Lawrence.

Kailtyn Merritt's 13-3 record from 2012 went up in flames today when Mia Manson cleared 13-4.

Manson very nearly claimed the indoor record early this calendar year and the national outdoor record (which easily exceeds the indoor record) gives her the all-time best freshman girls pole vault mark in the nation, period. Manson went to her third attempt to get the record-breaking bar.

Manson's big news isn't the only Colorado-worthy news out of Lawrence so far this week. Before I get to a telling of Colorado news from USATF JO Nationals, however, let me issue a disclaimer. The pile of results coming out of this meet is enormous. It is practically guaranteed that I am missing results in the list below, but here's what I've picked up on so far (In events with prelims, I'll only be including athletes who advance, in events that are finals I will include only top-eight finishers, and I will limit my comments her to athletes in the 13-14 age bracket or older):

  • Byrce Medaris finished 7th in the 17-18 2000 Meter Steeplechase with a time of 6:28.46.
  • Korey Hairston advanced to semis of the 13-14 200 with a time of 23.29 (NWI), placing fourth in prelims. And, his 22.74 advanced him to finals with the 7th position out of semis.
  • Chantae Steele advanced to finals of the 15-16 800 with a time of 2:18.92, placing fifth in prelims.
  • Erik Le Roux ran 4:18.77 to finish sixth in prelims and advance to finals of the 13-14 boys 1500.
  • Mason Anthony was the last one into semis of the 15-16 110 hurdles with a 15.62. Andrew Doctor's 14.84 advanced him to semis in the 17-18 division.
  • Diondra Wilborn was the last one into semis of the 15-16 100 hurdles with a 15.74. Jaiden Paris went 5th in the 17-18 division with a 14.13.
  • Gregory Anderson made semis of the 13-14 100 hurdles with a wind-aided 14.41. Jahzara Davis advanced on the girls side with a 15.10.
  • Korey Hairston and Sterling Brassfield went 6-7 in the 13-14 boys 100 meter dash prelims at 11.23 and 11.32. Both advance to semis. Mia Manson's 12.03 in the 15-16 girls advanced her to semis. Taylor Watson went 11.97 and Maya Evans 12.09 to advance in 17-18 girls.

That's what I've found so far. If I've missed something, let me know and I'll update the article.
