2013 Utah State Championship: 3a Girls Preview

The 3A girl’s team title is favored to go to the red and white clad harriers from Park City. They have potential to pull down big points in several events, especially distance and javelin. Ogden also looks to its depth in distance to mount a potential challenge. In addition to an exciting team race, the 3A girl’s state meet also holds several interesting story lines about individual races.

One of the most difficult tasks in distance is what is called a “triple,” winning the 800m, 1600m and 3200m runs. In the girl's distance races Ogden’s Sarah Feeny has the best chance to triple of anyone in the field to accomplish that feat, though she will face stiff competition. In the 800m, BYU bound soccer player and Ogden teammate Avery Calton owns the best time going into state. In the longer races, Ali Walker leads a strong contingent from Park City that looks to secure valuable points for the team race.

While traditionally sprints are dominated by upperclassmen, sophomore Olivia Leavitt will look to turn some heads in the girl's hurdles, owning some of the best times coming into the state meet. In the open sprints Aimee Bryson looks to title in both the 200m and 400 and can also challenge for the title in the 800m and 1600m as well.  while Chandler Weitzeil is the favorite headed into the 100m. Cedar will need a strong showing from its sprinters to factor into the team race, though they have the potential to be a dark house contender.

The girl’s field events will be highlighted by Megan Glasmann chasing history in the javelin. She will be looking to improve on her mark from earlier this year and bringing down the state record. Also competing in the discus, Park City will also be counting on Megan and fellow thrower Chrissy Glasmann for points in the team competition.

If you want to create your own team simulation, learn how to do it right here, so you can predict who will win on Saturday too. While there are favorites in each race, you still have to run the race to see who wins, and Utah Milesplit looks forward to covering all the action straight from the Robison track complex.
